HOW PEOPLE FIND JOBS
Most people who look for jobs either post their resume on the web, answer a
few ads and call a couple of recruiters and then sit back and wait for the
phone to ring. The only problem with this method is that the phone never
rings or if it does it doesn't ring nearly fast enough to get us where we
want to go.
The following is a percentage breakdown on how people find jobs:
- NETWORKING:60% of all jobs are filled by using this method. The most productive method of finding the right position.
- RECRUITERS: 15% to 20% of all job openings are filled by using recruiters.
- TARGETING COMPANIES*: 15% to 20% of jobs are filled by using this method.
- ANSWERING ADS: 5% of jobs are filled by using this method.
- INTERNET: Still compiling figures as to how effective it is or even if it is effective.
*TARGETING COMPANIES: This is where you pick some companies to research and
select them by product, size and location that you like. You don't know if
they have openings but if they did you would like to work for them.
ALTHOUGH SOME AREAS ARE LESS PRODUCTIVE THAN OTHERS DOESN'T MEAN THAT YOU
SHOULDN'T USE THAT METHOD. IN A JOB SEARCH YOU SHOULD ATTACK ALL AREAS WITH
THE SAME VIGOR. REMEMBER THAT 60% OF ALL JOBS ARE NEVER ADVERTIZED OR GIVEN
TO RECRUITING FIRMS. THATS WHY NETWORKING AND TARGETING ARE PROVEN METHODS
OF FINDING A JOB.
